What Is Deuces Wild?
Deuces Wild is a video poker variant where all four 2s (deuces) act as wild cards, substituting for any other card to form the best possible hand. This single rule change transforms the entire game — new hand rankings emerge, the minimum winning hand shifts to Three of a Kind, and the strategy becomes fundamentally different from standard video poker.
What makes Deuces Wild video poker remarkable is its return to player: the full pay version offers an RTP of 100.76% with optimal strategy, making it one of the only casino games where the mathematical edge belongs to the player, not the house. This is not a marketing gimmick — the math has been verified by independent analysts for decades. Of course, achieving that return requires perfect play on every single hand, which is why mastering the Deuces Wild strategy is essential.
The Deuces Wild card game was first introduced in the 1990s as casinos experimented with wild card variants to attract video poker enthusiasts. It quickly became one of the most popular games in Nevada and remains a staple in both land-based and online casinos today. You can play Deuces Wild free online right here — no download, no registration — to practice the strategy.
How to Play Deuces Wild — Rules Explained
Learning how to play Deuces Wild follows the same basic flow as any video poker game, with one critical difference: wild cards.
- Place your bet (1 to 5 coins). Always bet max 5 coins for the enhanced Royal Flush payout.
- Press Deal to receive five cards from a standard 52-card deck. Any 2s dealt to you are wild and will be highlighted.
- Choose which cards to hold. Wild deuces should almost always be held. Your strategy depends heavily on how many deuces you receive — see the strategy section below.
- Press Draw to replace unheld cards. Your final hand is evaluated with deuces substituting for whatever card creates the highest-paying combination.
- Collect your payout based on the pay table. The minimum winning hand is Three of a Kind (pairs do not pay because they are too easy to form with wild cards).
The rules of Deuces Wild poker are the same whether you play free Deuces Wild video poker here or at a physical machine. The key distinction from Jacks or Better is that pairs no longer pay, and a new hand — Five of a Kind — is added to the pay table. Four Deuces is also a separate premium hand with its own payout.
Deuces Wild Pay Table — Full Pay vs. Short Pay
The Deuces Wild pay table determines your expected return. Full pay Deuces Wild uses a 25/15/9/5/3/2/1 structure and returns 100.76% with perfect strategy. Many casinos offer reduced pay tables that cut into your edge significantly.
| Hand | Full Pay (25/15/9/5) | NSU Deuces | Short Pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| Natural Royal Flush | 4,000 (max bet) | 4,000 | 4,000 |
| Four Deuces | 1,000 | 1,000 | 1,000 |
| Wild Royal Flush | 125 | 125 | 125 |
| Five of a Kind | 75 | 80 | 60 |
| Straight Flush | 45 | 50 | 40 |
| Four of a Kind | 25 | 20 | 20 |
| Full House | 15 | 15 | 15 |
| Flush | 9 | 9 | 8 |
| Straight | 5 | 5 | 5 |
| Three of a Kind | 3 | 3 | 3 |
| RTP (Perfect Play) | 100.76% | 99.73% | 96.77% |
The difference between full pay and short pay Deuces Wild is nearly 4 percentage points — a massive gap. Always check the Four of a Kind payout (25 vs 20) and the Flush payout (9 vs 8) to identify which Deuces Wild pay table you are playing. Our free Deuces Wild video poker game uses the full pay 25/15/9/5 table so you can practice with the best possible odds.
Deuces Wild Strategy — Optimal Play by Deuce Count
Deuces Wild strategy is fundamentally different from Jacks or Better. Your optimal hold decision depends entirely on how many deuces you are dealt. This is the core concept of Deuces Wild video poker strategy — memorize the rules for each deuce count and you will be playing near-optimally.
Four Deuces (1 in 4,909 hands)
Hold all four deuces. Four Deuces pays 200 coins (1,000 at max bet). No draw can improve this hand — it is the second-highest payout in the game. Simply hold and collect.
Three Deuces (1 in 47 hands)
Hold all three deuces unless you already have a made Natural Royal Flush or Wild Royal Flush. Three deuces guarantee at least a Three of a Kind on any redraw. The only reason to hold additional cards alongside three deuces is if you already have a completed premium hand (Wild Royal or better). Otherwise, discard the two non-deuces and draw fresh.
Two Deuces (1 in 8 hands)
- Hold any made Four of a Kind or better. Do not break quads to chase a Wild Royal.
- Hold 4 to a Royal Flush (two deuces + two suited Royal cards). Draw one card for a shot at the top payout.
- Otherwise, hold just the two deuces and draw three cards. Two deuces give you a guaranteed Three of a Kind or better, and the three-card draw maximizes your chance of Four of a Kind, Five of a Kind, or a Wild Royal.
One Deuce (1 in 3 hands)
- Hold any paying hand of Three of a Kind or better.
- Hold 4 to a Royal Flush.
- Hold 4 to a Straight Flush.
- Hold 3 to a Royal Flush.
- Hold 4 to a Flush.
- Hold 4 to an open-ended Straight.
- Hold 3 to a Straight Flush.
- If none of the above apply, hold just the single deuce and draw four cards.
No Deuces (1 in 2 hands)
- Play similarly to standard video poker, but with critical differences.
- Do NOT hold single high cards. Without a deuce, lone Jacks, Queens, Kings, or Aces have no special value because the minimum hand is Three of a Kind.
- Hold 4 to a Royal Flush, Straight Flush, or Flush.
- Hold any made paying hand (Three of a Kind or better).
- Hold 3 to a Royal Flush.
- Hold any pair (to draw for trips).
- Hold 4 to an open-ended Straight.
- Hold 3 to a Straight Flush.
- If nothing applies, discard all five cards and draw fresh.

Deuces Wild Odds and Probabilities
The odds in Deuces Wild are shaped by the wild cards. Here are the key hand frequencies with optimal play on a full pay machine:
| Hand | Frequency | Contribution to RTP |
|---|---|---|
| Natural Royal Flush | 1 in 45,282 | 1.76% |
| Four Deuces | 1 in 4,909 | 4.07% |
| Wild Royal Flush | 1 in 557 | 4.49% |
| Five of a Kind | 1 in 322 | 4.66% |
| Straight Flush | 1 in 236 | 3.81% |
| Four of a Kind | 1 in 15 | 32.53% |
| Full House | 1 in 47 | 6.29% |
| Flush | 1 in 61 | 2.96% |
| Straight | 1 in 18 | 5.46% |
| Three of a Kind | 1 in 3.5 | 34.73% |
The most striking statistic is that Four of a Kind hits once every 15 hands on average — compared to once every 423 hands in Jacks or Better. This is why the Four of a Kind payout (25 vs 20) is the single biggest differentiator between full pay and short pay Deuces Wild. Three of a Kind and Four of a Kind together account for two-thirds of your total return.
Deuces Wild Variants
Several Deuces Wild variants exist, each with modified pay tables and slightly different strategies. Here are the most common ones, all available for free play on our site:
- Bonus Deuces Wild — Adds premium payouts for Five of a Kind and Four Deuces + Ace kicker. Higher variance but exciting for experienced players.
- Loose Deuces Wild — The highest-returning Deuces Wild variant at 100.97% RTP. Four of a Kind pays only 4 coins, but Four Deuces pays 2,500. Extremely high variance.
- NSU Deuces Wild — A near-full-pay version at 99.73% RTP. Named after the North Star University video poker research group.
- Downtown Deuces Wild — A Las Vegas downtown-style pay table variation.
- Colorado Deuces Wild — The Colorado-regulated version with state-mandated minimum payouts.
Tips for Playing Deuces Wild
- Always hold all deuces. Never discard a wild card. The only exception is exceedingly rare (e.g., you have three deuces and already hold a Natural Royal Flush pat hand — which happens less than once in a million hands).
- Forget high-card strategy from Jacks or Better. In Deuces Wild, holding a lone King or Ace with no deuce is a mistake. The minimum winning hand is Three of a Kind, so single high cards carry no special value.
- Check the pay table before playing. The difference between full pay Deuces Wild (100.76% RTP) and short pay (96.77%) is enormous. Look at the Four of a Kind payout — 25 coins means full pay.
- Prepare for higher variance. Deuces Wild has bigger swings than Jacks or Better. Bring a bankroll of at least 500 bets for a comfortable session, or 1,000 bets for extended play.
- Practice with our free Deuces Wild trainer. Play free Deuces Wild video poker above with no download required. The deuce-count strategy takes time to internalize — free play removes all financial risk while you learn.
For UK Players
Deuces Wild video poker is available at UK-licensed online casinos regulated by the UK Gambling Commission. UK operators are required to display the RTP for all video poker games, so you can verify whether you are getting a full pay or short pay Deuces Wild table. Note that full pay Deuces Wild (100.76% RTP) is rarely offered at UK online casinos because the player-positive edge makes it unprofitable for operators — most UK sites offer NSU or short pay versions instead. Our free Deuces Wild game above uses the full pay table and requires no account, no deposit, and no age verification. It is purely for practice and entertainment with play credits.
